Civil War letters, 1863-1864.

The collection consists of three letters. Two from Burt Scott to his brother Edward in Hancock County. He writes from Vicksburg, Mississippi in July 1863 after the Siege of Vicksburg. His second letter in September 1863 is from Natchez, Mississippi. The third letter is from W.W. Rafand to Edward Scott telling him of his brothers death at Nickajack Creek in Georgia.

Burt Scott was a resident of Hancock County, Indiana. He enlisted as a private on 24 October 1862 and was mustered into the Indiana 53rd Infantry. Following this the regiment moved on to Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, and finally Georgia. It was there at the Battle of Nickajack Creek that Scott was shot through the chest while he carried the regimental flag and died on the field. From the description of Civil War letters, 1863-1864.
